Andrew Reynolds

Join us as we focus on a story about a young man who has been influenced by great people like Jean Robert, but still has the healthy perspective that family comes first. Meet Andrew Reynolds.

Ever since I was old enough to pull a chair up to the kitchen counter, I have been obsessed with the concept of food. I fell in love with the culture behind cuisines, the science and chemistry between flavors, and the art in the presentation. I truly believe that food has shaped every aspect of my personality: my politics, my hobbies, my areas of study, my friendships. I believe every person on this earth should experience the dignity and respect of a guest in a restaurant. I believe that what we eat should be designed to help the earth, not be a contributor to the end of it. I believe a true friendship should be one where you can put aside all of life’s divided beliefs and be able to enjoy a plate of spaghetti and meatballs. I say food is my personality because food brings people together, and the core of my beliefs rely on the idea that unity and solidarity are the only ways for everyone to truly flourish.

Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I come from a family of six — two older brothers and a younger sister. We have always been very close and were each other’s best friends growing up. My parents have always been very loving and fostering of all of our creative and academic affairs.

Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Currently I am a student at Northern Kentucky University. Additionally, I own a private dining company, ReynoldsCooks, where I am able to cook for strangers and friends alike. My favorite aspects of cooking for people is the idea of community over one thing, food! Great meals mean so much more than what is on the plate. They have the ability to change perspectives and create memories that shape a lifetime. I feel fulfilled any time that I am able to contribute to such a magical experience.

What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
I am biased towards Jean Robert’s Table. It is in this kitchen that my love for cooking went from something of a passion to a lifestyle. I mentored here about once a month for a couple of years starting when I was thirteen. I love Jean Robert and everything he does for this city, and I think all of Cincinnati owes a debt of gratitude to him for his influence in all of the great Cincinnati kitchens. Another one of my favorite celebratory restaurants is of course, Sotto. And Amerasia in Covington is ole’ reliable, always so tasty.

How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I have lived in this community my entire life, riding my skateboard through the streets and enjoying lazy days at Washington Park.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
France — I feel like I cannot be a proper cook until I have worked in a French kitchen.

What is one of your favorite movies?
La La Land — the combination of pure escapism and relentless inspiration make it one that resonates with me through a lot of life’s decisions.

What advice would you give to people?
I view myself as a student rather than a mentor. Any time I think I know something, it is usually proven to be otherwise. I guess my advice would be – don’t be cocky, it gets you nowhere.

What is something on your bucket list?
I would love to live in the countryside of Italy for a few years in a vineyard and learn winemaking. It sounds like the ultimate paradise.

What is your go to music when you cant decide what to listen to?
The Beatles — I know that at the very least, listening to the Beatles will always put me in a great mood. No sane person can be angry and listen to Here Comes the Sun.

What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Holtman’s Donuts is a classic. I remember as a kid thinking that the bacon, maple donut was the craziest invention mankind has ever seen. I will never forget the line that wrapped the block when my dad and I went to surprise my mom with them for the first time on Mother’s Day.

If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?
David Chang, the owner of the Momofuku restaurants — I would take him to skyline to talk food over a 3 way and a coney. I think that he is a literal genius and would love to learn all I can from him.

What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I love that our city is not too proud to enjoy beautiful things together. During events like Blink and Lumenocity, our city comes together and enjoys the magic of art. Our sense of community is binding and the virtue of humility is valued by the people of Cincinnati.

Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
My dream has always been to travel the world and bring my findings to a restaurant in my hometown as a homage. In 5 to 10 years, if my plans do not change, I will hopefully be somewhere completely unexpected, somewhere I cannot even predict. I do imagine I will be eating well though.

What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I am an avid skier and love to run.

What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
The drive through Zion National Park at sunset is valued as the most stunning site I have ever seen. I don’t know if it was the refreshing air through the car windows, the majestic rock structures, or the jet red sky, all I know is that it was breathtaking.

Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
June — the beginning of hot summers and long days. Christmas — always there to look forward to in the dead of Winter. The summer solstice — the longest day of the year.

What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
An oat milk latte from Urbana Cafe in Findlay Market on a cold day. I love coffee and that drink just hits differently.

Who inspires you to be better?
My little sister, Grace. I think I strive to be a good older brother to her because of how good my brothers were to me. She is full of life and creativity. Truly she makes me want to be a better person.

What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Freshly ground coffee is always amazing and is probably the best part of my mornings.

Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Comforting, motivating, and safe.
